    AI business coach

An AI business coach is software that does the two things a human coach spends most of their time on: helping you work out the next right thing, and expecting you to have done it. It beats a human coach on availability, cost and memory of detail. It loses on judgement, on the accountability that comes from disappointing an actual person, and on knowing when you are avoiding something. The useful ones hold state about your business. The rest are a chat window with a different label.

    What a coach actually does

Strip the word back and a business coach does four things: asks questions until the real problem surfaces, brings pattern knowledge from other businesses, helps you pick what to do next, and expects an answer next week about whether you did it.

Software is genuinely good at three of those. It can ask a long sequence of questions without getting bored, it has more pattern knowledge than any individual, and it is very good at breaking a vague goal into a specific next action. It is available at eleven at night, which is when most side project work happens.

The fourth is where it gets interesting, and it is the one most tools skip.

Accountability is the hard part, and it is not conversational

A chat interface cannot hold you accountable, because you control when it opens. Nothing happens if you do not turn up, and the whole failure mode of a side project is not turning up.

Accountability has to be something that happens to you rather than something you initiate: a check-in that arrives whether or not you opened the app, a plan that still has your place in it a fortnight later, a small group of people who notice the silence. Those are product decisions, not model decisions, and they are what separates a coach from a very good answer machine.

How to tell a useful one from a chatbot

Four questions will sort almost any tool in this category.

    • Does it know your business without being told again? If you have to re-explain what you sell at the start of every conversation, it is a chat window.
    • Does anything arrive when you do not open it? If not, it cannot hold you to anything.
    • Does it produce work, or advice about work? A tool that ends on a paragraph of guidance has handed the job back to you.
    • Does it ever say you are wrong? Anything that agrees with every plan you describe is not coaching, it is a mirror.

Where a human is still worth the money

For a decision that will define the next two years, for anything where the honest answer is uncomfortable, and for the specific case where you already know what to do and are avoiding it, a person is worth what they cost. Being seen by someone who has skin in your outcome is not something software supplies.

The realistic split, if you are building around a job: software for the weekly rhythm, and a human occasionally, for the decisions that are actually hard. Most people have that backwards, and pay a lot for someone to help them make a plan they then do not follow.

    Frequently asked questions

Is an AI business coach worth it?

If it holds state about your business and something arrives when you do not open it, yes, for a fraction of what a human costs. If it is a chat window that starts from nothing each time, you already have that, and it is free.

Can an AI coach replace a human business coach?

For the weekly rhythm of working out the next step and being expected to do it, largely yes. For decisions that will define the next two years, and for the moments when the honest answer is uncomfortable, no. Someone with a stake in your outcome does something software does not.

How is this different from asking ChatGPT?

A general assistant gives a competent answer to the question you asked, then forgets you. It does not know what you charge, what you shipped, what you tried last month, or what you said you would do this week, and it never contacts you first. Those are the parts that change outcomes.

What does an AI business coach cost?

Typically a subscription in the tens per month, against hundreds per session for a human. The more useful comparison is not price but whether it changes what you do on a Tuesday evening.
